Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee partners with Adecco for athlete career development in Taiwan
Programme to support Olympic and Asian Games athletes as they make the transition from the field of play to the world of work
November 15, 2013 – Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee (CTOC) and Adecco Taiwan, a subsidiary of the world’s leading human resources organization, today signed an agreement that will support Olympic and Asian Games athletes as they make the transition from sport to the world of work, to kick off locally the IOC’s Athlete Career Programme (IOC ACP), which provides athletes with career and employment advice and training that includes workshops, counseling and training.
Mr. Thomas Tsai, President of the CTOC signed the agreement with Mr. Patrick Glennon, Adecco SVP for the IOC ACP, along with Ms. Cindy Chen, Regional Head for Adecco North East Asia. Ms. Yang Yang, the former Chinese gold medalist of Olympic short-track speed skating and the first Chinese retired athlete from Olympic Winter Games elected to the IOC, and local Olympic gold medalist Mu-yen Chu witnessed the signing ceremony.
Athlete career counseling has increasingly drawn global attention and has become an important agenda for IOC Athlete Commission. For many athletes who have dedicated their lives to sport, the transition to a new career, outside of sport, can be a difficult and emotional experience.
Thomas Tsai, President of the CTOC said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity for CTOC to cooperate with Adecco promoting ACP. I believe future programmes will benefit our athletes a great deal. Also, I would like to thank Chih-Hsiung Huang, Chairman of Chinese Taipei Athlete Commission, for his leadership of the Commission, and for the creative ideas and endless efforts offered by the Commission members.”
Ms. Cindy Chen, Regional Head for Adecco North East Asia, reinforces the value of the programme and explains, “While elite athletes may reach the finish line in their sporting careers, the IOC and IPC Athlete Career Programmes ensure that they will receive customized and professional counseling to face the challenges ahead as they transit into the workplace. The programme will provide relevant and appropriate support to those making this important change.”
Adecco Taiwan will hold its first athlete support event in Taipei in early 2014, providing an one-on-one career counseling service for Chinese Taipei athletes under training for the Asian Games and Olympic Games.
Since 2005, over 13,000 athletes have benefited from career training and job placement support in over a hundred of countries.
As the first major effort to implement the programme, CTOC and Adecco will jointly hold a “2013 Athlete Career Guidance Seminar” on 16-17 November in the National Training Center, with both Mr. Patrick Glennon and Ms. Yang Yang as key workshop leaders.
This programme will also provide opportunities for local athletes to equip themselves with skills and accommodate their needs at every stage of their “second career”.
